Georgia Redistricting Alliance Supports SCOTUS’ Allen v Milligan DecisionThursday, June 8, 2023 (ATLANTA, GA) – Today, the Georgia Redistricting Alliance released the following statement in support of the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in the Allen v Milligan case:Allen v. Milligan is the most consequential redistricting case in the recent history of the U.S. Supreme Court and had the potential to further erode the landmark Voting Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination in voting. SCOTUS’ decision today has temporarily mitigated vast impacts on state laws across the country, including how other states such as Georgia draw their own congressional maps.
“The Supreme Court’s decision today in Allen v. Milligan is a win for communities of color and their ability to fairly and equally participate in the democratic process, but there is still much more work to be done,” said Karuna Ramachandran, Redistricting Director for ProGeorgia. “This is one win in a string of attempts to rollback voting rights and protections for underrepresented people in this country. The Georgia Redistricting Alliance remains focused on raising awareness of the importance of redistricting to the lives of Georgians and will continue to fight against efforts to erode our democracy.
The decision in Allen v. Milligan had the potential to make the disparities between states even greater. All Americans should have the right to challenge and dispute racially discriminatory maps and to elect candidates of choice. While SCOTUS made the right decision today, we must continue to fight for federal, state and local reforms that best protect the voting rights of people of color.
